Spanish scientists develop ‘anti-Zika drug’

Compound previously used as antibiotic
Researchers from a southeastern Spanish university announced the discovery of a molecule that could be used as a potential drug to fight the effects of a Zika virus infection.
In a statement on Saturday, the San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia said that scientists belonging to its Bioinformatics and High-Performance Computing research group had found that a compound previously used as an antibiotic countered the symptoms of the mosquito-borne disease, Efe news reported.
“It’s a drug that had been withdrawn from the market because it had lost its potency as an antibiotic, but we know it can be administered to humans,” said Jose Pedro Ceron, a member of the research team.
The molecular structure of the proteins involved in the Zika virus’ replication process was first described only a year ago.

Art to heal wounds in Srinagar

Constable’s calligraphy exhibits win hearts at scene of DSP’s lynching
A police constable’s calligraphic work won hearts and buyers at the first-ever calligraphy exhibition held here at Jamia Masjid, where the body of a Deputy Superintendent of Police was left after being lynched a month ago.
Constable Ishfaq Ali Parray, in his late twenties, came across as any other artist displaying his works in the week-long exhibition organised by the Srinagar chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage at the Islamic Centre in Nowhatta.

It was not an easy decision for Mr. Parray, a contemporary artist, to put up his work at the same spot where DSP Ayub Pandith was beaten to death by a mob on the night of June 22. “The episode during Ramzan (when Pandith was killed) was in the back of my mind. I thought I will just visit on the inaugural day and leave the venue quickly. To my surprise, local people and visitors appreciated my work. I received calls as people impressed by my work wanted to see me. I decided to stay back for the week,” Mr. Parray told The Hindu.
As the exhibition ended on Sunday, Mr. Parray said he was surprised by the people’s response. “Such footfalls are not possible anywhere else. Locally, people are aware of the arts. I put up 15 works. Eighty per cent has been sold and I have many orders to work on now,” he added.

The calligraphy of Mr. Parray is popular ever since his painting of the verses of Jaan Muhammad Qudsi, who was granted ‘Mulkush Shura’ (poet laureate) title by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, became a big hit. “I drew the verses first time in the winter. I used bright colours to draw four couplets in praise of the Prophet. It was a hit. I have received more orders for the same,” he said.

Virtual repository at your fingertips: National Digital Library - Tap into the National Digital Library for a great reading experience.

Imagine having a collection of six million books at home. The National Digital Library (NDL) is aiming at making this a reality. With the new NDL app for Android, users can read over 7.2 million books in 70 different languages. The National Digital Library of India, hosted by IIT Kharagpur and sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, is a single window portal to integrate the digital repositories of India. The subjects range from computer science, philosophy, and religion to literature, agriculture and fine arts.
Humble beginnings
“NDL started as a pilot project in April 2015 by MHRD. From a humble beginning on a PC to demonstrate the proof of concept, it is now a full blown project; making educational content available to the entire nation at their fingertips. NDL is “open” and “inclusive.” Anybody can register and start using NDL,” said Prof. Partha Pratim Das, professor in-charge and overall coordinator of the project at IIT Kharagpur.
Some of the content available on the repository includes NCERT textbooks, textbooks of 8 state education boards, JEE, GATE and UPSC question papers, papers/theses from Indian Institute of Science, Indian Statistical Institute, IITs, IIMs, IISERs. Publications from the laboratories of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) can also be accessed online.
“There are over 2.5 lakh entries on cancer. The convenient filtering system allows you to choose the subject area, language and file type. Though there are many books, the number of research articles is limited — only open access journals and research articles are available. It would be helpful if we can get access to paid journals too,” says Alekhya T. Kilambi, Research Scholar at Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai.
Though scholars are a bit disappointed, students seem to be on the optimistic side. “Children these days don’t like going to the library. So we brought the library to them. They can read over three lakh pieces under literature section. Kids are more inclined towards audio-visuals for stimuli as opposed to the written word. So we also have some of the best-loved tales and short stories in the form of digital resources such as audio-books,” says a representative of IIT Kharagpur.
“We have also started a social media campaign called #NightTimeRead which is live fiction at night,” she adds. The campaign was launched on June 3 on the NDL India Facebook and Twitter pages. Each post carries a synopsis of a short-story along with the link to the content.
“We all love a good read before we go to sleep. #NightTimeRead is an endeavour to bring a little bit of fiction and folklore back into the lives of our users this summer vacation. It promises to present some bone-chilling, heart-pumping, tear-jerking, laughter-loving indigenous and foreign literature just as the stars come out! We are also hoping the short audio-book format will intrigue more people to experience these incredible stories,” said an official from NDL India.
The app has a few bugs like unexpected crashing and inability to download PDFs. If properly organised and updated frequently, NDL has immense potential to help the student community and bring the reading culture back to the younger generation.

3 internships during engineering studies? You can plan well and do it right

Getting three internships in college is not very difficult if you plan carefully and focus on areas where you need to improve

HRD minister Prakash Javadekar’s recent announcement in the Lok Sabha that it is now mandatory for engineering students to do at least three internships during college has left many engineering students worried about which internship to do and, more importantly, when. Well, the good news is that it’s not so difficult and here are some tips on how you should go about it:
1: An internship to acquire soft skills: In the first year of college, you’ll have limited technical skills, but this is the best time to acquire soft skills which help you communicate and are imperative for your success. So, without any qualms, choose an internship which helps you hone your soft skills.
2: An internship in fields like management, content writing, or sales: This will improve your communication skills and at the same time, you will learn to work in a team and get an insight into the corporate world. An NGO internship, on the other hand, will help you discover yourself.
3: An internship to learn the practical applications: In second and third year, with improved communication skills and a better understanding of your field, go for an internship where you can get your hands dirty. For instance, if you are interested in programming, then intern with a startup and work on live projects in C/C++, Java, PHP, or web designing. Also, start networking with professionals in your field of interest and be in touch with the team you worked with in the past as they could help you land your third internship. By the end of your second internship, you will get clarity on whether you want to make a career in your field or head towards a new field of your interest.
4:An internship which can lead to your first job: The experience from your first two internships will help you build a great resume and prepare you for the multiple interview rounds. So, after third year, start applying to internships with the brands you want to work with. Once you get an internship, make sure you focus on applying your knowledge and gaining an in-depth understanding of the latest technologies and tools. Your third internship will help you land your first job as you might probably get a pre-placement offer ( PPO) even before you graduate!

Internships to be made must for engineering: AICTE chairman

From addressing underemployment among engineering graduates to handing them degrees only on completion of four months of internship , some overarching changes are in the pipeline in technical education in India, Anil Sahasrabuddhe , chairman, All India Council for Technical Education, tells Manash Pratim Gohain . Excerpts:

More than 60% of the engineers graduating every year remain unemployed. This is a potential loss of 20 lakh man days annually.
They are not 'unemployable' but they are 'underemployed'. The industry says 60% of our graduates are not fully prepared. So they need further training, which means to start with these students may not get the same salary as compared to 40% of their peers. Instead of starting with a salary of Rs 4-5 lakh, they are not even getting Rs 1.5 lakh per annum.

What is the road ahead?
We have made internships mandatory to fill the gap so that they become suitably employable. Each student is to undergo two summer internships with the industry of two months duration each. There are over 10,000 technical education institutions in the country. AICTE alone cannot monitor the implementation of the internships. We will ask the universities to make the internships mandatory and also to make provision for it in their academic calendar. Universities should also give grades or offer credits for the same, at least as qualifying.

What is the status of the single National Entrance Examination for Technical Institutions?
There has been some apprehension from the states. So we are waiting for the outcome of tests like NEET.

HRD ministry is planning reforms like mandatory annual teacher training for approval of institutions and annual revision of curriculum. What is the status?
The curricula of our engineering institutions have not been revised for quite some time. In next 10 to 15 days our new model curriculum will be announced. We will ask all states, universities and institutions to adopt that allowing some contextual changes if they feel necessary. A committee of professors of eminence and experts from industry will continue to work for the next five years.

What about MTech curriculum?
MTechcurriculum is also very poor. MTech graduate may opt to teach instead of joining the industry. In that case it adversely affects the engineering education. We are planning to change the curriculum next year, along with introducing industry internships.

Isn't quality of private technical institutions a concern?

While we can't paint all as bad, however, there are large number of private institutions with poor infrastructure and bad quality students. They don't have well trained teachers as well. But parents and students are gradually rejecting them. And if they fail to fill 30% of the seats for five consecutive years they will have to close down.

Why is Yoga made mandatory for engineering pupils?

Not just yoga! It can be activities like sports, NCC and also yoga. If some institutions want to give credits as well they can go ahead. This has been done to change the outlook of students and sensitise them on the needs of the nation.

What is your opinion on Higher Education Empowerment Regulation Agency which is expected to replace bodies like AICTE?
As of date nothing has been finalized on HEERA. There are advantages of a single regulatory mechanism as there are lot of overlapping of mandate and discrepancies at present.

Promising Vaccine: New Zika vaccine may protect baby from birth defects

New Zika vaccine may protect baby from birth defects
Houston: An experimental Zika vaccine administered during pregnancy may protect the unborn baby from infection and birth defects, scientists have found.
Although promising progress on developing vaccines has been made with animal models, the study from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in US is the first to demonstrate that potential vaccines could protect a foetus from the Zika virus.
“In the study, we were the first to show that two different potential vaccines given to the mother prevent the Zika virus from infecting the foetus during pregnancy in a mouse model,” said Pei-Yong Shi, professor at UTMB.

“Based on these data, we believe that evaluating the vaccines' ability to prevent birth defects in humans is warranted,” said Shi.
While a Zika infection typically results in mild or symptom-free infections in healthy adults and children, the risk of microcephaly and other diseases in a developing foetus is an alarming consequence that has created a worldwide health threat.

Pregnant women who are infected with the virus but never display any symptoms may still give birth to a baby with microcephaly.
Female mice were vaccinated against Zika with one of the two developing vaccines prior to becoming pregnant and then exposed to the virus during their pregnancies.
Researchers found the vaccinated pregnant mice showed little or no evidence of the virus in the mothers' body including the placenta or in the foetuses' bodies.

“Having a Zika vaccine that can protect pregnant women and their unborn babies would improve public health efforts to avoid birth defects and other effects of the disease in regions where Zika is circulating,” Shi said. The findings were published in the journal Cell. -

The gift of knowledge

A website introduces donors of books to those in need

A news item that Mrunal Jitendra Bajaj saw in 2015 touched her deeply, and gave her life a new meaning. The news was about a boy in Class IX who committed suicide as he had no money to buy textbooks.
It prompted her to start a portal, www.donateurbooks.com, for people wishing to donate books and those in need of books. All transactions on the website are free.
“Every house has a stock of old books that are rarely used. Due to space constraints, many sell these to scrap dealers at throwaway prices. While some of us wish to give them to the needy, we are not aware of where we can donate them,” says Ms. Bajaj.
Ms. Bajaj, now a Class XII Commerce student of Saraswati Secondary High School, Thane, has been running the website for two years. Around 587 customers have registered on donateurbook.com and nearly 125 books are listed on it, most of them in the educational category.
For inspiration, Ms. Bajaj didn’t have to look beyond her family. Her grandfather, Sudhakar Bajaj, is a freedom fighter while her parents, Jitendra Bajaj and Reema Bajaj have been running a free educational institution for underprivileged children in Thane since 1994. “I have seen the financial constraints faced by such children up close; particularly how difficult it becomes for them to buy textbooks,” says Ms. Bajaj.
How it works
A very simple registration process is required to list the books one wishes to donate. Once the registration process is complete, the donor can post the images of the books.
Books can be listed in different categories and sub categories. In the educational category, for instance, there are the standard (class) and medium sub-categories.
“This is done to make the task easier for the user,” says Suyog Vaze, Director and CEO of Techspiron Systems, that developed the website.
“The quality of book can be rated and multiple images can be uploaded,” he says. The listing is verified by the administrator and activated later to ensure the authenticity of the listing and the user.
“The user who wants a particular book can search for it by typing its name or using the filter option available on the home page or book category section. If you are a registered member, you can see the contact details of the person and the location,” says Ms. Bajaj.
While contacting the donor, the user needs to mention that she got the number from the site and the donor has to give the listed book free of cost.
A boon to many
The website has helped more than just school students. Ravi Shetty, who is now in his second year of MCom, received nearly three books when he was studying for his BCom through the site. “I have in turn given those books to my friends in need.” He says the website has helped many students who are unable to buy books due to financial constraints and have to solely rely on libraries, which at times are far from their homes.
Says Tanvi Kemse, a second-year student of Business Management Studies, KV College, Thane, “I was able to get a book on Law last year, which was helpful to me. This site really makes us value books more and encourages us to donate them after use.”
Ms. Bajaj has not so far kept a record of the number of transactions on the website, considering they were all free of cost, but intends to do so now. There is also a plan to develop a platform for students who are searching for schools and colleges in their area.
The ultimate aim
“We desire to make it an educational listing portal and to connect students with professors of various institutes to enable them to ask their questions directly on chat,” says Ms. Bajaj. The ultimate aim, she says, is, “No student from India should ever be deprived of education simply because they are unable to purchase books.”

President launches SWAYAM, Believes it to uplift quality of education nationwide

The Centre will formally launch Swayam Prabha – a project for telecasting “high-quality educational programmes” through 32 DTH channels – here on Sunday at a National Convention on Digital Initiatives for Higher Education.
The program of Human Resource Development Ministry spells out as Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM). Underlining the need for making quality study material available in regional languages, he said pupils found it hard when study materials were in an alien language. tnn Under Swayam, courses will be offered through digital classrooms with online study material available free of cost. It offers courses ranging into hundreds and they are those which are taught at school, college and university level.
The project will also telecast teacher-training content.
The students will be assessed through proctored examination and the marks and grades secured in this exam could be transferred to the academic record of the students, according to the website. It also provides courses of vocational nature and also for those who want to study while continuing with their jobs. These courses have been developed by over 1,000 expert faculty members from premier institutions like IITs, Delhi University and JNU. SWAYAM should be a call to the pioneers amongst teachers to put new courses in the upcoming areas on this platform in the MOOCs format. The courses offered are from school to post-graduate level. However, those willing to get certificates, diploma or a degree through Swayam will have to get registered on its portal and pay “a little fee” for pursuing the courses.
The president has expressed hope that these digital initiatives would help in producing the highly qualified youth required for the Make in India campaign.
They will have the opportunity to raise queries which would be answered in real time, HRDminister Prakash Javadekar said.
While all 32 educational channels will be aired 24×7 on Dish TV under the brand name of ‘Swayam Prabha, ‘ channels dedicated to helping students to prepare for the entrance tests for engineering and medical courses will be aired under the IIT-Pal. ICT solutions offer an interactive learning experience through which students in remote parts of the country can benefit from lectures of the top teachers.

Google launched an initiative to improve how users work with artificial intelligence

  • The research initiative will involve collaborations with people in multiple Google product groups, as well as professors from Harvard and MIT.
  • More informative explanations of recommendations could result from the research over time.
Alphabet on Monday said it has kicked off a new research initiative aimed at improving human interaction with artificial intelligence systems.
The People + AI Research (PAIR) program currently encompasses a dozen people who will collaborate with Googlers in various product groups — as well as outsiders like Harvard University professor Brendan Meade and Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Hal Abelson.
The research could eventually lead to refinements in the interfaces of the smarter components of some of the world's most popular apps. And Google's efforts here could inspire other companies to adjust their software, too.
"One of the things we're going to be looking into is this notion of explanation — what might be a useful on-time, on-demand explanation about why a recommendation system did something it did," Google Brain senior staff research scientist Fernanda Viegas told CNBC in an interview.
The PAIR program takes inspiration from the concept of design thinking, which highly prioritizes the needs of people who will use the products being developed.
While end users — such as YouTube's 1.5 billion monthly users — can be the target of that, the research is also meant to improve the experience of working with AI systems for AI researchers, software engineers and domain experts as well, Google Brain senior staff research scientist Martin Wattenberg told CNBC.
The new initiative fits in well with Google's increasing focus on AI. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has repeatedly said the world is transitioning from being mobile-first to AI-first, and the company has been taking many steps around that thesis. Recently, for example, Google formed a venture capital group to invest in AI start-ups.
Meanwhile Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft have been active in AI in the past few years as well.
As for design, that isn't new to Google, either. The company implemented a redesign for several of its apps in 2011 and in more recent years has been sprucing up many of its properties with its material design principles. And in 2016 John Maeda, then the design partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, pointed out in his annual report on design in technology that Google had been perceived as improving the most in design.
What is new is that Googlers are trying to figure out how to improve design specifically for AI components. And that's important because AI is used in a whole lot of places around Google apps, even if you might not always realize it. Video recommendations in YouTube, translations in Google Translate, article suggestions in the Google mobile app and, yes, even Google search results are all enhanced with AI.
