GPAT fee rise serious financial burden on students, pharmacy colleges call to slash by 50%

GPAT fee rise serious financial burden on students, pharmacy colleges call to slash by 50%

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences’ move to increase the exam fee has upset the students as it is a financial burden on their parents. The Board conducts the Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT). Pharmacy colleges have taken cognizance and called for a 50 per cent decrease in the fees.

The communique from National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences stated that for the category such as General, OBC (other backward caste) and EWS (economically weaker section), the fee levied is Rs. 3,500 against Rs. 2,000 earlier. For the SC, ST (scheduled caste/tribe) and PWD (Person with Disabilities), the fee is Rs. 2,500 against Rs. 1,000 earlier.

Pharmacy colleges pointed out that exam fee hikes can indeed pose a significant challenge. Such increases can create additional monetary problems, potentially deterring some students from pursuing their career goals. It is crucial for the authorities to consider the broader impact of such fee adjustments and work towards ensuring accessibility and affordability for aspiring professionals.

According to Dr Kaushik Devaraju, president, Karnataka Registered Pharmacists Association, the recent hike has raised eyebrows among many students, who aspire to pursue a career in pharmacy.

While we understand the need for financial sustainability and quality maintenance of such examinations, the substantial rise in fees appears disproportionate and burdensome, especially for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Education, particularly in fields like pharmacy, should be accessible to all deserving candidates regardless of their financial status, he added.

Noting that GPAT plays a pivotal role in determining admission to esteemed pharmacy institutions, Dr Devaraju said that it is imperative that the process remains inclusive and equitable. However, the exorbitant application fee threatens to deter talented individuals from applying, thereby limiting diversity and talent within the pharmacy profession.

Chiming in on a similar tone was Prof R Raveendra, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Cauvery College of Pharmacy, Mysuru and Charter President of Indian Pharmaceutical Association of Peenya branch, who said that interactions with many students who aspire to take up GPAT exam to get their PG admission with scholarship from Pharmacy Council of India/government authorities have said the fee is expensive

They also expressed that the GPAT exam will be held as a computer-based format and with no printed question paper or answer booklet. This has cut the expenses of stationery. In view of the same, we are insisting the authority of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences to reduce fees by 50% and help the students and lessen burden on parents as well, Prof Raveendra said.

Dr Devaraju urged the authorities responsible for arriving at this fee structure to reconsider their decision and strive for a more balanced approach that ensures accessibility without compromising the quality and integrity of the examination. Measures such as fee waivers or tiered pricing based on income could be explored to alleviate the financial burden on students while still maintaining the necessary resources for conducting the GPAT effectively.

In conclusion, it is essential to strike a balance between financial sustainability and accessibility to uphold the principles of fairness and equal opportunity in education. We hope our concerns, along with those of countless other students, will be taken into serious consideration, leading to a revision of the GPAT application fee for the betterment of aspiring pharmacists and the profession as a whole, Dr Devaraju said.

Civil Engineering: AICTE’s model syllabus introduces mandatory internship, courses in AI-ML, robotics

Civil Engineering: AICTE’s model syllabus introduces mandatory internship, courses in AI-ML, robotics

The BTech Civil Engineering model curriculum has courses on accessibility, transportation, sustainability and provides for minor and honours degrees.

NEW DELHI: An All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) committee has designed a new model curriculum for civil engineering which includes courses on AI-ML and accessibility, provision for minor and honours degrees, and a compulsory internship. AICTE-approved engineering colleges can design their own curricula based on it. Committee chair and dean, academics, Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, Mumbai, KK Sangle spoke to Careers360 about the changes, enhancing employability and more.

Q. Civil engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering but has it lost its charm? What is the new curriculum changing?

In the new curriculum, we have given a lot of flexibility to students. We know that the enrolment ratio for the civil engineering branch is reducing year-by-year. One of the aspects we noticed is that students are getting more job opportunities in circuit branches, so more circuit branches are approved by the AICTE. Having said that, there is a lot of scope in civil engineering as well. Our nation requires competent civil engineers. In line with this, we have decided that students who complete a four-year degree programme must be industry-ready; the industry has to spend minimal time in training them.

Major changes in the curriculum are in line with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

One important change we have brought in is a mandatory internship of six months during the seventh or eighth semester. This is the first time that the civil engineering curriculum has introduced internships which will boost the employability and develop skills through practical learning, exposure and hands-on-learning.

Keeping in mind all these aspects and the needs of all types of students, internships will help students learn civil engineering more effectively. It cannot be taught completely in the classroom.

Q. What topics have been added to or removed from the civil engineering syllabus?

There are a lot of modern techniques and tools that are used in civil engineering, including many design softwares and modern equipment used for execution of mega projects. These topics have been added to the curriculum, including how to use the softwares and equipment, in almost each course. We have also added the information and technical know-how used by people in the industry, both nationally and internationally.

Also, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and internet of things (IoT) are used extensively in civil engineering. So, we have added AI and ML in our new curriculum, particularly to see how it works.

The titles of the new courses are “Robotics and Automation in Civil Engineering”: “Building Planning Computer-aided Civil Engineering”; and “Sustainable and Green Constructions and Intelligent Transportation Systems”.

These have been included as mandatory courses. Because governments and people are talking about smart cities, smart structures, and intelligent transport systems, a few courses have been added on these. A civil engineer must have a knowledge of interdisciplinary skills.

Further, we have also kept an optional interdisciplinary minor degree. Usually, there are students who are academically strong and who can do a minimum of 164 credits and further, if they want to learn more, can earn minor degrees in emerging areas like application of computers, artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D printing. Students can take up a minor degree which is relevant to civil engineering but not a core subject. The minor degree will help students enhance their degree and job opportunities will increase along with good salaries.

Pharmacy Council of India to conduct GPAT exams on June 8

The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) will be conducting the Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) for entry into M Pharm programmes in the country, in line with the Supreme Court's order which mandated that the pharmacy education should be governed by the Pharmacy Act, 1948.

The first GPAT examination under its aegis will be held on June 8, 2024 (tentative date), for the year 2024-25 through National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), said the Council.

The Council will also disburse the stipend to the students who have passed GPAT examination in the year 2023-24 and onwards. The disbursement procedure will be initiated in due course of time, it added.

The Council directed the candidates to refer to the NBEMS website for information bulletin, application form and other details of the examination.

Till 2018, GPAT, the national level entrance examination for entry into M.Pharm programmes were conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) every year as per the directions of the Union Ministry of Education (MoE).

The examinations were conducted through the National Testing Agency (NTA) from the year 2019 as per the directions of the Ministry.

The Supreme Court, through an order on March 5, 2020, directed that the AICTE Act, governing general technical education, would be amended to remove pharmacy from its mandate, and the pharmacy education would thereafter be governed by the Pharmacy Act, 1948.

"As per Hon'ble Supreme Court's Judgement PCI is the supreme body for Pharmacy Institutions across the Country," said the PCI. "From year 2024, the Pharmacy Council of India has taken the initiative to conduct the GPAT examination and disbursement of scholarships to the GPAT qualified candidates," it added in a circular issued to all pharmacy institutions, all GPAT qualified students for the year 2023-24 and all students preparing for the Aptitude Test.
