Boosting Innovation: A Look at AICTE’s Research Promotion Scheme (RPS)

Boosting Innovation: A Look at AICTE’s Research Promotion Scheme (RPS)

The Indian technical education landscape is undergoing a transformation, with a growing emphasis on fostering a culture of research and development. At the forefront of this initiative is the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which introduced the Research Promotion Scheme (RPS). This scheme aims to empower institutions and faculty members to delve deeper into their fields, pushing the boundaries of knowledge and igniting a spirit of innovation.

The RPS specifically targets AICTE-approved technical institutions and university departments that offer postgraduate programs in relevant fields. This ensures that the participating institutions possess the necessary infrastructure and academic environment to support rigorous research endeavors. But the RPS isn’t just about the institutions themselves. It also focuses on nurturing the research potential of faculty members. To be eligible, the principal investigator (PI) leading the project must be a full-time, regular faculty member with a proven track record of research experience and publications.

The core objectives of the RPS are two-fold. Firstly, it seeks to create a research-conducive ambience within institutions. This involves encouraging faculty members to engage in projects that explore cutting-edge advancements in engineering sciences and established and emerging technologies. Secondly, the scheme aims to cultivate a new generation of research talent. By supporting projects with clear deliverables, the RPS hopes to generate a pool of qualified Master’s and Doctoral degree holders who can contribute significantly to the Indian research landscape in the future.

The scheme was launched by AICTE Chairman Professor TG Sitharam at AICTE HQ, New Delhi

The All India Council for Technical Education launched AICTE AURA (Augmenting Utilization of Research Assets 2024 Scheme) to promote the utilization of I-STEM (India Science Technology Engineering facilities Map) by providing the financial aid to teachers and students in AICTE approved colleges for utilizing I-STEM facilities and boosting research.

"The scheme was launched by AICTE Chairman Professor TG Sitharam at AICTE HQ, New Delhi," as per a press release.

During the launch, he highlighted that "Investing in R&D creates opportunities for collaboration with academic institutions and research organizations. The aim of AURA scheme is to augment existing research by utilization of public funded hardware and software R&D facilities mapped by I-STEM, and thereby developing a culture of research in technical education Institutions".

Through AICTE AURA Scheme, the use of I-STEM in research will be promoted by providing financial assistance to full time/regular faculty of AICTE approved institutions and students of PG scholarships, ADF fellowship and QIP scheme. The scheme is also beneficial for PG students of AICTE approved institutions who have not availed PG scholarships.

"Under the scheme, an amount of up to Rs 2 lakh will be given to the researcher for the use of equipment and facilities registered on the I-STEM portal. The project will last for a maximum of two years. There is no age bar to avail the benefit of the scheme. However, an eligible faculty member or a researcher is eligible to use the scheme only twice in his entire career," as per the release.

The Government of India has been making investment in research and development infrastructure through different ministries or departments and has created excellent infrastructure that is spread across the country in premier educational institutions and national laboratories. Through pioneering efforts of the Office of Principal Scientific Advisor (OPSA), an India Science Technology Engineering Facilities Map (I-STEM) Portal has been established, towards enhancing the utilization of public-funded infrastructure.

Centre launches common fellowship portal for PhD, post-doctoral aspirants

The portal will host applications of Indian Council of Medical Research, University Grants Commission (UGC) and AICTE soon.

NEW DELHI: The Union minister of science and technology Jitendra Singh launched the common fellowship portal for doctoral and post-doctoral students. The centralized-portal has been developed to provide all information about the doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships of various departments of Government of India.

Singh said the common fellowship portal (fellowships.gov.in) will save the energy and time of aspiring students and startups by enabling a simplified and streamlined process from the submission of applications.

The portal will allow candidates to create profile and use the same information to auto-fill different application forms. Currently, the department of science and technology, department of biotechnology, Council Of Scientific and Industrial Research under the ministry have come together for submission of applications.

The minister said that soon the portal will host application forms for all other departments such as Indian Council of Medical Research, University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The portal, fellowships.gov.in, features a unique ‘eligibility-calculator’ which allows applicants to check their eligibility for various fellowship schemes.

“The portal bridges the information gap for students seeking details of different fellowship programs by bringing all the relevant information regarding eligibility and application at one place,” the official website read.

It also facilitates the generation of a unique ID called as ‘Common Fellowship Portal (CFP) ID’. “This allows a more streamlined and efficient application process, enabling the candidates to apply for available fellowships from this common portal. This portal will serve to visualize the data analytics for Human Resource Development in science and technology,” it added.
