Pharmacy Council of India to conduct GPAT exams on June 8
The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) will be conducting the Graduate
Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) for entry into M Pharm programmes in the
country, in line with the Supreme Court's order which mandated that the
pharmacy education should be governed by the Pharmacy Act, 1948.
The first GPAT examination under its aegis will be held on June 8, 2024 (tentative date), for the year 2024-25 through National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), said the Council.
The Council will also disburse the stipend to the students who have passed GPAT examination in the year 2023-24 and onwards. The disbursement procedure will be initiated in due course of time, it added.
The Council directed the candidates to refer to the NBEMS website for information bulletin, application form and other details of the examination.
Till 2018, GPAT, the national level entrance examination for entry into M.Pharm programmes were conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) every year as per the directions of the Union Ministry of Education (MoE).
The examinations were conducted through the National Testing Agency (NTA) from the year 2019 as per the directions of the Ministry.
The Supreme Court, through an order on March 5, 2020, directed that the AICTE Act, governing general technical education, would be amended to remove pharmacy from its mandate, and the pharmacy education would thereafter be governed by the Pharmacy Act, 1948.
"As per Hon'ble Supreme Court's Judgement PCI is the supreme body for Pharmacy Institutions across the Country," said the PCI. "From year 2024, the Pharmacy Council of India has taken the initiative to conduct the GPAT examination and disbursement of scholarships to the GPAT qualified candidates," it added in a circular issued to all pharmacy institutions, all GPAT qualified students for the year 2023-24 and all students preparing for the Aptitude Test.
The test facilitates institutions to select suitable Pharmacy graduates for admission into the Master's (M.Pharm) program. The GPAT is a three hour computer based online test which is conducted in a single session. The GPAT score is accepted by all AICTE and PCI-Approved Institutions/University Departments/Constituent Colleges/Affiliated Colleges.
