Posted On: 11 DEC 2023 5:17PM by PIB Delhi

To promote female students to pursue higher education and research, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has introduced Pragati Scholarship and TechSaksham Program (TSP) for women.  The Pragati Scholarship was started in the year 2014 to award scholarship to meritorious girl students to encourage them to pursue higher education.  AICTE is awarding 10000 scholarships (Pragati) to the girls entering in the technical education.  TechSaksham Program is a top-up program that uses experiential learning to develop employability skills amongst underserved female students pursuing higher education.

With a view to improve female enrolment in the Undergraduate Programmes in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), supernumerary seats were created which increased the female enrolment from 8% in 2018-19 to 20% in 2020-21.  As per All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), the Female Enrolment in STEM Courses has increased from 38.4% in 2014-15 to 42.6% in 2021-22 (Provisional).  As per World Bank Gender Data accessed in 2023, female share of graduates from STEM as percentage of tertiary education in India (2018) is 42.7%, in US (2016) is 34%, in UK (2016) is 38.1%, in Australia (2017) is 32.1% and in Germany (2017) is 27.6%.

The information was given by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Subhas Sarkar in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.

AICTE proposes to remove cap on engg seats from 2024-25

New Delhi: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) proposes to remove the cap on seats for individual branches from 2024-25. This means that more students could go to top engineering colleges at the cost of mid-tier ones.

At present, a college can have a maximum of 240 seats in one branch. The upper limit was introduced following a mismatch between demand and supply. “As envisaged in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and the nation’s proactive initiatives towards enhancement of Gross Enrolment Ratio, the council proposes to remove the upper limit on intake allowed for colleges/programmes offered by existing institutions,” AICTE said in its draft approval process handbook.

The council mentioned that this was subject to infrastructure availability and occupied faculty positions. Expert committees will make inspections before granting approval for an increase in intake. An increase in seats will be allowed only if the institution already offers at least three courses in core branches, according to a Times of India report.

While top engineering colleges are upbeat, the mid-level ones that provide quality education are worried that the move would affect their admissions. “We will wait for the final approval process handbook, although there is a likelihood that the proposed move will increase the gap between the top colleges and mid-tier ones. They may not be able to provide quality education if admission dips,”  B Chidambararajan, director of SRM Valliammai Engineering College was quoted as saying.

The report quoted Anna University vice-chancellor R Velraj as saying that the move would accelerate the end of sub-par engineering colleges. As of now, Tamil Nadu has a sanctioned strength of 2.6 lakh seats in 440 engineering colleges.
