Kolkata: Android mobile application of the
National Digital Library of India (NDL India) has been declared the winner of
mBillionth South Asia Award 2017 in ‘Learning and Education’ Category, an IIT
Kharagpur statement said.
The project had been mooted by IIT
Kharagpur few ago and was approved by the Human Resource Development Ministry.
NDL India is a national online
educational asset for students interested in research and innovation.
The award is given as a recognition
of excellence in mobile innovations for the development and evaluation
criteria. It includes the quality of content and services delivery, relevance
of content and its utility value, the social impact of the application/product,
user friendliness and interactive nature of the application.
NDL India is an umbrella over
existing digital repositories with Indian language user interface aimed at
reaching out to people at every corner of the country.
The educational contents contain not
just books, papers but class lectures, audio books and lectures, tutorials,
assignments and solutions, simulations, animations, data sets through a single
window access.
“It is for all leaners, at all
levels, and in all subject areas and anyone can download the app free on his
set having Android or iOS (Apple) App,” IIT Kharagpur Director Prof Partha
Pratim Chakrabati said.
NDL India has now over 1 crore
content in more than 200 languages and available as web app
(https://ndl.iitkgp.ac.in), as a mobile app on android and on iOS (Apple) for
free. The app has features to search, browse, filter, tag, comment and view
metadata. The windows app is to be released soon.
