Pune: The
Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) has put together a database on the demand and
supply for medicinal plants across Maharashtra.
As many as 400
species of plants have been investigated from all 34 districts of the state. Of
the total, 157 have been listed as priority species while the remaining are
non-priority.
Samples from
1,710 locations were investigated as part of the project and the details are
available on the institute’s website as well as a book.
ARI director
Kishore Paknikar said, “The database, titled Digitized Inventory of Medicinal
Plant Resources of Maharashtra, elucidates high value medicinal plant resources
occurring in the state. The work is an outcome of the National Task Force
Commission’s recommendation. The commission expects the states to prepare
inventories of medicinal plants along with data on demand and supply.
Maharashtra is perhaps the first state to come up with the database.”
The 1,710
locations were selected across 290 talukas of 34 districts. The database can be
accessed on mpd.aripune.org.
