NEW DELHI: The Indian drug regulator has
ordered an investigation into the popular anti-acidity drug Ranitidine for
possible presence of an impurity that may cause cancer after recent reports and
a decision by drug major Dr Reddy’s pulled the product off the shelves. The
Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, which regulates quality, safety
and efficacy of medicines in India, has referred the matter to an expert
committee for detailed examination.
The panel will examine various brands of Ranitidine sold in the country. Though
most international regulators including USFDA and EMA have not banned the drug,
regulators have alerted public to be cautious and consult their doctors. Some
regulators including the Health Canada and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) of
Singapore have initiated recall as a precautionary measure.
