Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was an Indian researcher and
politician who assumed the main role in the advancement of India's nuclear and
atomic weapons programmes. He was the President of India between 2002 to 2007. Dr. Kalam earned a degree in aeronautical
engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology and in 1958 joined the
Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). His role in the nation's
1998 atomic weapons tests built up Dr. Kalam as a national hero. Dr. Kalam won the Presidential election and
became India's eleventh president in July 2002. He stayed focused on utilising
science and innovation to create a technologically advanced nation.
Dr. Kalam wrote several books, including an autobiography,
"Wings of Fire", which became an instant hit. Among his numerous awards
were two of the country’s highest honours - the Padma Vibhushan and the Bharat
Ratna. Dr. Kalam died of a cardiac
arrest on July, 2015.
