Mumbai: For the first time, a research institute for facilitating
education of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be established at Kalina campus
of Mumbai University (MU). The state government has signed a memorandum of
understanding (MoU) with Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence (WIAI),
California and MU for this research institute.
The aim is to
provide students an opportunity to explore the field of AI as it is an
undiscovered field in the education scenario. The focus of AI will be on
various sectors like E-Governance, Healthcare, Infrastructure, Agriculture,
Finance, Economics and Manufacturing. Students will get a chance to conduct ground
level research in these sectors.
The students
will get a chance to work on AI in different methods using advanced technology
and facilities.
The state government aims to provide opportunities for
students to explore this arena which students are not aware of. A senior
officer of MU said, “Students are not aware of AI and the scope for research in
these sectors. It is the first time such an institute will be established in
our city.”
Students will
be trained to work on development, deployment and application of advancements
in AI to extend support for the society. Wadhwani Institute will enrol faculty
and students from MU as researchers to work on various projects and the
institute will partner with banking, finance and Information Technology (IT)
companies to facilitate industry apprentices and job opportunities. The
institute is expected to be inaugurated in the last week of February 2018.
