There has been no progress on the proposal to introduce a
single entrance exam for engineering courses due to the opposition from states,
said Anil Sahasrabudhe , chairman, All India Council of Technical Education,
the regulatory body for technical courses.
Speaking on the sidelines of a conference on Wednesday, Anil
said, "The issue is not closed, but it's not on either. Since education is
on the concurrent list, many states do not want to implement it. I believe the
best way is to have a single entrance test that is held multiple times a
year."
"There are many advantages of a single test. A student
from an underprivileged background need not pay for several tests and need not
travel to other places to take tests. However, states must start from
implementing NCERT syllabus in classes before a common test can be
implemented," he said.
The AICTE chief added the restriction on opening new
institutes over the next two years is not just for engineering colleges but
also applicable to pharmacy colleges. "Around 900 pharmacy colleges opened
last year alone. To prevent the pharmacy education sector from facing the fate
of engineering colleges, we decided to take this step. However new government
colleges will be allowed in aspirational districts," he said.
About 50% of undergraduate seats in engineering colleges have had no takers.
