Berlin hosted an overview of world architecture on February 15
through 17. During the World Architecture Festival, the German capital
also hosted the INSIDE Festival of Interiors. There were 78 finalists in the
2017 competition, divided into nine categories and selected out of more than
200 competing interiors. The biggest prize was World Interior of the Year 2017, awarded to the Fabricwood installation designed for the Xtra store in Singapore by Produce.Workshop.
The
installation looks like a fabric, specifically a quilted fabric, but is
actually a wooden surface, hence the name “Fabricwood”, moulded and
modelled using traditional tailoring techniques. The project underlines the
particular features of the Herman Millerbrand operating the
store. Inspired by ergonomic research for the
brand’s chairs, the architects of Produce.Workshop designed a wooden surface combining form, structure and innovation, a 20 m x 7 m
veil of lightweight plywood forming an enormous canopy in the store. A skin
creating a comfort zone in the store, in which to create a welcoming, casual
atmosphere for exhibiting the brand’s furnishings and the chairs inspiring it.
