Loretto new pool house wins architectural design award

LORETTO, Tenn. – When Loretto Mayor Jesse Turner and members of the Town Council started taking about a new swimming pool and complex, they wanted to make sure it was something the town’s residents would be proud of.
“We wanted it to make an impact on the town, something positive,” Turner said.
Turner said he knew the pools and pool house would be the “focal point” of the town.
Salter Construction of Lawrenceburg built the new “state of the art” pool, which includes a high-efficiency heater to extend the swimming season for the public.
The pool and complex, which cost just over $1.1 million, was financed through a grant with the Tennessee Office of Sustainable Practices and the town of Loretto.

Once the pool was completed Turner said Matheny Goldmon Architecture and Interiors of Huntsville was selected to design the pool house.
“We had a small pool house, just an old block building, at the old pool,” Turner said. “We wanted something more attractive to go in line with the new swimming pool.”
Paul Matheny was the lead architect and designed a facility in Loretto City Park that is visually appealing.

For the pool house design Matheny Goldmon has been awarded the 2017 Merit Award for the American Institute of Architects North Alabama Designs Awards.
“It was a great project, that’s the kind we really enjoy, one that does something to make a real impact on a community,” Matheny said. “It’s very rewarding for us to be recognized for this project.”
Matheny said everyone was on the “same page” on the project.
“The design was good, the construction company did a great job, funding fell into place, everything just came together for a beautiful project,” he said. “We always look for the opportunity to do something to make a real architectural impact on a community. You don’t always get that, we did in this case, and the pool house is it.”
Turner said it’s exciting for town the size of Loretto to have an award-winning pool house.

“It’s a beautiful structure and it’s not something people would think about having in a small town like Loretto,” Turner said. “It’s a great addition to the town and to the park. We’re proud of it.”
