Google announces the best apps of 2017 - The most popular apps of the year come from various categories —from education to culinary arts and games


As the year comes to an end, Google shares a list of the most popular apps from the Google Play Store. The ‘Best of 2017’ collection highlights apps from various categories and some of them, might come across as a surprise too.

We take a look at some of the best apps shared by Google:
Most popular new game of 2017
Super Mario Run
Without a doubt, Super Mario Run was on the list for the most popular new game. This game is free to play but does require purchase in order to unlock the content. Users can try out all four modes before purchase: World Tour, Toad Rally, Remix 10, and Kingdom Builder. The game initially released last December for iOS and released for Android in March this year. Pokmon Go was the top game last year.

Most popular new education app of 2017
Socratic - Math Answers & Homework Help
This app might be a blessing in disguise for those students who struggle with their homework. With Socratic, students can take a photo of their query, for example - a math equation, and get explanations, videos, and step-by-step help. Apart from Maths, students can also use this app to learn about subjects such as Science, History, English, Economics and more.
The app’s AI is stated to use a computer vision technology which reads homework questions from images. The machine learning classifiers built using millions of sample homework questions, to predict which concepts will help students solve their questions.

Best ‘Daily Helper’ app of 2017
SideChef: Step-by-step cooking
The award for the Best Daily Helper category has gone to Side chef: step-by-step cooking. This app makes the process to cook a bit easier as it offers quality recipes and along with voice commands. Users can also rate recipes and upload their photos.

Most entertaining app of 2017
PicsArt Animator: Gif & Video
PicsArt Animator allows users to make cartoon videos, animated GIFs and funny doodles.With this app, users can use animated stickers and add customized movement and also draw frame-by-frame animations. Apart from this, the app allows users to draw on photos and make animated selfies with advanced drawing and sketching tools. Google categorizes the ‘Improve English: Word Games’ app as the hidden gem of 2017. This educational app helps you learn and improve English in an interesting and effective manner. The platform works on scientific algorithms and is designed to improve vocabulary, English idioms, phrasal verbs, homonyms/homophones and also, common confusing English words.
